Notes

  • ShapeBuilder can generate beam cross-sections in the shape of a “I.” To define a I-Section, use the following parameters.
    1. @SHAPE_GROUP: WALLED_OPEN, and
    2. @SHAPE_TYPE: I_SECTION.
  • The base section is an open section consisting of top and bottom flanges connected by a web, as illustrated in fig. 1. Two options are available for this shape.
    1. Option 1, activated by setting o1 = 1, consists of a reinforcement located on top of the top flange.
    2. Option 2, activated by setting o2 = 1, consists of a reinforcement located at the bottom of the bottom flange.
  • Optional dimensions @DIMENSION_12 and @DIMENSION_13 define two shaping parameters, denoted α and β, respectively, which are used to round the corners of the section. (Default value: α = β = 0.5).
  • Sectional shapes are defined in their own local coordinate system, which is assumed to coincide with the global coordinate system. If a fixed frame, FrameName, is specified, the local coordinate system coincides with this fixed frame.
  • The mesh density parameter, md, determines the level of mesh refinement. (Default: md = 4)
  • It is possible to attach comments to the definition of the object; these comments have no effect on its definition.

The I-Section: base configuration

  • Fig.1 illustrates the base configuration of the I-Section, which is composed of the web, top flange, and bottom flange.
  • The geometric configuration of the I-Section if defined by the dimensions listed in table 1, which are also indicated in figs. 1, 2, and 3. Dimensions labeled in red are required. Dimensions labeled in blue are optional and are assigned the default value indicated in table 1.

  • Zone 1 of the I-Section is defined as follows.
    • It comprises the following faces: FlangeTopLeft1, FlangeTopLeft2, FlangeTopLeft3, WebLeft, FlangeBotLeft3, FlangeBotLeft2, and FlangeBotLeft1.
    • It is associated with material Mat1 , which can refer to material properties or solid properties.
  • Zone 2 of the I-Section is defined as follows.
    • It comprises the following faces: FlangeTopRight1, FlangeTopRight2, FlangeTopRight3, WebRight, FlangeBotRight3, FlangeBotRight2, and FlangeBotRight1.
    • It is associated with material Mat2 , which can refer to material properties or solid properties.

The I-Section: option 1

  • When option 1 is active, i.e., when o1 = 1, the top flange is reinforced, as illustrated in fig. 4.
  • The geometric configuration of the reinforcement if defined by the dimensions listed in table 2, which are also indicated in fig. 4. Dimensions labeled in red are required. Dimensions labeled in blue are optional and are assigned the default value indicated in table 2.

  • Zone 3 consists of the reinforcement of the top flange and is defined as follows.
    • It comprises the following faces: FlangeTopReinfLeft1, FlangeTopReinfLeft2, FlangeTopReinfRight2, and FlangeTopReinfRight1.
    • It is associated with material Mat3, which can refer to material properties or solid properties.

The I-Section: option 2

  • When option 2 is active, i.e., when o2 = 1, the bottom flange is reinforced, as illustrated in fig. 5.
  • The geometric configuration of the reinforcement if defined by the dimensions listed in table 3, which are also indicated in fig. 5. Dimensions labeled in red are required. Dimensions labeled in blue are optional and are assigned the default value indicated in table 3.
